How To Write A Resume Checklist

February 28, 2019 by Kay

They’re really is a lot of confusing and conflicting information on the topic of how to write a resume.

It’s a real challenge to know how you should present things and which information you should and shouldn’t include in your CV.

We’ve outlined a few key areas for you to keep in mind when sitting down to write and/or improve your Curriculum Vitae.

Resume Presentation

With respect to the presentation of your resume when making decisions it’s a good idea to take account of the following areas:

  • The best overall look and feel to use.
  • How long your resume needs to be
  • The best font types and sizes to use
  • When writing your CV you also need to take into account how to present headings and sub-headings
  • The final area to consider is whether the use of bold is appropriate in a Curriculum Vitae document.

Resume Content

With respect to the content that needs to be included then there’s often confusion about the following areas:

  • The personal details you should include. For example, whether it’s advisable to include your street address as well as your email address.
  • How far to go back when writing about your educational qualifications.
  • How many jobs you should include and how you should you write about your jobs.
  • What you can do if you’re in the ‘catch-22’ situation of not having very much work experience at all, but needing the experience to get a potential employer interested in you.
  • What sort of additional information such as hobbies and/or certifications its appropriate for you to include.
  • There’s also confusion regarding at what point you should give information about your referees.

Resume Structure

Also, once you are clear on exactly which content to include, then, you really need to think about what order this content should be placed in.

Should you list details about your education before the details about your work history for example?

It is a really competitive job market and organisations often receive hundreds of applications for the one position.

So it’s important you present yourself in a way in your curriculum vitae, that enables you to stand out from the masses of competition out there.

Hopefully, these pointers have given you a little more clarity about what you need to think about when writing a resume.
